Goals

Clear vision and direction is one of those things that we all lack, badly, I know that I am the most impatient man in the world and I have many examples to back up that claim. I am impatient at work, impatient at home, impatient with my wife, impatient with all my friends, impatient with everything. This impatience clouds my vision, it draws me into a place of frustration and takes my eyes from the good things the have happened and will happen and makes me focus on the negative that is frustrating me. But I think that part of the problem in vision is that we keep it locked away, it’s all in our mind, people can’t read our mind, we never get around to communicating effectively what the vision and goals are, what the result would be.

If we can’t communicate effective what the specific goal is, our impatience and resentment towards others will only grow when it isn’t done ‘our way’.

Take work as an example, I am not the manager or boss of anyone at work but that doesn’t stop me from expecting things from other people, after all a good team should be relying on others. The issue is, my goals for work are very different to my boss’ goals, who’s goals are different to another persons goals, who’s different again to another person’s goals. We each expect that others will be working towards achieving goals, but sometimes we forget that our goalposts can be in very different position to each other, sometimes they are even in a completely different direction.

Seeing as though we are talking ‘Goals’ it only seems right to bring AFL football into it. The goal of football is to score goals, and to score more than the other team, if the whole teams isn’t focusing on achieving the goal of scoring goals then they will end up with none, if every person on the team took it upon themselves to just score their own goals in the place that they think the goal posts are, there would be every man and his dog in the forward line ready to kick with no-one in the centre to even get the play started and none left left in defence to stop the opposition from running rampant and scoring their own goals at the other end. If we don’t all agree on where the goal posts are then you are going to have a whole bunch of behinds on the scoreboard because people aren’t kicking straight. I think that at times we focus on scoring our own goals more highly than scoring goals for the team where the real posts are set.

Sometimes we forget the mission, the real goal…’that every man, woman, boy and girls would know the love, grace ad salvation of Jesus Christ.’ If we spend too long looking at our own goals, new buildings, new notoriety, new leadership positions, more money, we forget the reason we even have what we have, Jesus.

If Jesus isn’t the goal and we aren’t working as a team to bring others to him, Satan will be down the other end kicking goals for himself while we fight about where the goals posts really are.

“Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matt 28: 19-20

“Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant” Galatians 1:10
