“For this reason I remind you to fan into flames the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” 2nd Timothy 1: 6-7 NIV
I think it is fair to say that at time we are all guilty of ‘smouldering’, failing to burn as bight as Jesus created us too. We spend our lives choosing to be blackened embers, burnt out from what we once were, deliberately showing the scars on the outside so that we won’t be asked to reignite the flame that still hides within, waiting for someone to notice our blackness and sacrifice, holding our potential within until we feel it is our time for all to see our glory.
Possibly that analogy is a little bit of a stretch for you to really connect with, but what I think is happening far too often is people are hiding their God given gifts behind a bitter exterior for one of two reasons. They have been hurt and just can’t let go or put themselves out there to be hurt again, which is understandable for a season but we can’t hold on to it forever otherwise we will die bitter and jaded about the world. Secondly, we choose to hide our gifts because it is easy to fit in a ‘plain jane’ and cruse along through life.
We are being encouraged to fan into flames our gifts, to fan anything into flames you have to give it one one of 3 things to stoke it. Oxygen, Fuel, Heat. For Spiritual fire, it is the same, Breath of God as our Oxygen, the Truth of Jesus in the word as our Fuel and the leading of the Holy Spirit to apply Heat. Just like fire, you lose one, you lose them all.
Fan the flame of your gifts – Connect with God, Discover the Truth of Jesus, Follow the Holy Spirit’s leading. That how to be ‘on fire’ for God.
Just a Thought.
