12 Carols of Christmas: Astray

Today carol is a Christmas classic, “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen”.  The lyrics were originally written around 1760 and have great story behind them which I won’t go into now but is worth researching some more if you really love history and carols.

The lines I would like to bring up are part of the first verse (usually people only know the first verse or chorus of carols so hopefully you remember these ones.)

“For Jesus Christ our Saviour
Was born upon this day,
To save us all from Satan’s power
When we were gone astray”

Today this is a timely reminder that even though we have the blessing of heaven shined into our lives through the birth of Jesus, we all still so often fall into Satan’s power again and again and walk astray from God.  Jesus’ birth opened our hearts to let God in, we also need to remember to let him stay in there and not to walk astray from his call on our lives to follow him.

I would love a life that was immune to Satan’s power, the power that often confuses and reasons to leads me astray, but the only way for that to end is if God takes the lead and we never snatch it back from him.

Jesus came to open the doorway to Heaven and lead you through it, make sure you don’t get tempted to walk out of it again when you feel like it.

Merry Christmas
