I love that at Christmas we get back to the ‘music of old’, a time when people weren’t scared to write a song in a minor key, admittedly all the popular carols now are the happy clappy ones in a Major tonality, but it is nice to hear something that sounds so dark to modern ears actually proclaiming the most joyful moment in history. A lesser known carol, I Wonder as I Wander, is one that is often left out at Christmas, but it is really is a good one. Great lyrics that come from the perspective of someone taking some time out to think (how often does that happen today). Even just the first verse is such a challenge to us, how often, even as Christians, do we stop and prioritize our thoughts on Jesus.
I wonder as I wander out under the sky,
How Jesus the Savior did come for to die.
For poor on’ry people like you and like I…
I wonder as I wander out under the sky.
The verse I would like to highlight, again is a later one so hardly ever sung, reminds of the Soverienty of that little baby:
If Jesus had wanted for any wee thing,
A star in the sky, or a bird on the wing,
Or all of God’s angels in heav’n for to sing,
He surely could have it, ’cause he was the King.
Jesus, even as a baby could have had it all yet he chose to be human that we might be saved through his human life on earth.
This Christmas remember the power he chose to forsake just so that you and I may live a free life.
