25 Days of Christmas Music: ‘Friends for Christmas’ – John Farnham and Olivia Newton-John

Olivia Newton-John and John Farnham are still surprising their fans even after all these years   The end of 2016 sees them offering a collaborative Christmas album appropriately titled; Friends for Christmas. Together, the Australian icons and long-time friends have released over 40 studio albums collectively, with their latest effort focusing on the family values and cheer that surround such a joyous time of year.

This album features all of the go-to classic songs you might expect, with It’s Beginning To Look a Lot Like Christmas and Baby It’s Cold Outside as well as the Christmas staple Silent Night and the always cheery Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. Showcasing a traditionalist musicality, the swinging big band sound is the main attraction on Friends For Christmas – bringing the laid back and joyous emotion needed for a festive retreat.

Having attended a few Farnham concerts in my time, and one that also had Newton-John alongside him, it has to be noted that I was nervous about this one, but it seems the voice is still going strong and the iconic Farnham sound is heard consistently throughout the album. Olivia Newton-John delivers a balance to the album of duets with a respectable offering.  I certainly was not expecting the calibre of performance from both artists given their long service to the industry, but the vocal chords are still going strong and it is quite a reasonable and fun album.

The momentum matches the history for each of the chosen tracks, respecting the tempo of the original songs. Composed with a thoughtful integrity, the warmness and inviting ideas that come with the holidays can be heard throughout the album.
